At Poway Samurai Martial Arts, The Difference is In The Tradition
Maybe you came to this site because you were just looking for a karate school. San Diego has a lot of martial arts schools, but you’ll only find a rare few that offer the richness of tradition that Poway Samurai Martial Arts has to offer.
In this day and age of real life “blood sports” and glorified violence, it seems the very things that make the martial arts such a great activity for families are being left by the wayside.
And that’s what makes us different from the typical modern martial arts studio. We continue to teach the martial arts as both an art and as an extremely effective method of self-defense.

“Katsujinken” – The Sword That Gives Life
“Katsujinken” is a Japanese phrase that literally means “the sword that gives life”. Katsujinken is an important and prominent concept in the Japanese bujutsu (warrior ways of the samurai and ninja – what we teach here at Poway Samurai Martial Arts) because it teaches that martial skill must always serve a greater purpose.
Whether that purpose is protecting the weak, or helping a child improve their focus so they can get better grades, katsujinken is at the heart of what every good sensei (a martial arts teacher, literally “one who has gone before”) teaches his or her students. And, this important tenet of bushido (the honor code of the samurai) a central theme for what we offer here at Poway Samurai Martial Arts.
